Creating The Right Environment

23 Jan 2018
by Peter Wright

So we have a train set on a board and the trains runs great. What next?

Well, the next stage would be to add a few buildings and generally give the train a purpose for being. In the real world railways were not just built for the fun of it, well at least not in the beginning but maybe the preservationists have changed all that, instead they were built to serve a purpose, whether it was moving passengers or moving freight or both. In the same way as the real railway engineers, we need to think about this when we are beginning to consider adding scenery and buildings to our layouts too. What is going to be our railway's purpose? A mine, a petro-chemical plant, a simple dockside, a large mainline station, a country halt in glorious countryside, the choices are endless. Once you have decided what you are going to build, the next question is; How?

Getting Your Trains To Make A Noise!

Laying down the track and running a train around and around is only part of the fun that can be gained from owning a train set. Turning it into a permanent layout is the next logical step and this can take a lifetime to achieve! Many people think that they simply need to add a few buildings and lay a bit of grass or ballast and they are finished, only to find that their imagination starts to kick in on their next visit to their local model railway shop, when they see something else and know just the little corner that it would perfectly fit into! And so begins a lifetime of model railway layout building.

In recent years, a new dimension has been added to the world of building a model railway layout; DCC sound. Sound, itself, is not actually new to model railways as Hornby Triang fitted some of their tender locomotives with a sandpaper strip and metal clip on the axle of the tender to give a very passable impression of the chuff-chuff sound of the locomotive as it sped along. Very basic technology and not matched to the locomotive's real sound it may have been, but in the mind of the observer, did it really matter? The locomotive was making a chuff-chuff sound as it went along making the experience feel that much better. Today, of course, sound is all digital and far more accurate and realistic with most of the sounds now being digitally recorded from the actual locomotive, wherever possible, whilst Hornby have introduced a very successful range of TTS Decoders which do a very good job and at a very reasonable cost too!

So why add sound? For many enthusiasts sound is

Now that Bachmann, Graham Farish and Hornby have all announced the exciting new models they have planned for the forthcoming year and beyond, we are pleased to say that, as previously, we will be offering every single locomotive, coach and wagon for sale in the shop and on our website. It is quite an undertaking to get things prepared so keep watching as the new models are added to the website in the coming days and weeks.

Some of these models are going to be more in demand than others and it is wise to pre-order some of these models to ensure that you get the model you desire and don't end up disappointed at missing out. On this website you will see the models that are available on a pre-order basis by the delivery filter and on checkout you can choose to use Deferred Payment, which takes your credit card payment and stores the payment with the bank until we release the payment when the model is available. However, after 30 days the payment expires but your order is still valid and we will contact you to renew payment when the model is released. Remember, at no stage does anyone have any access to your payment information so your credit card details are perfectly safe. This gives you peace of mind that no matter how long it takes for the model to be released, your money is safe and will not be touched until we despatch the model to you.

You can also choose to pay a 10% or 20% deposit which secures your purchase of the particular model at the price prevailing when you place your order. The balance becomes due when the model is released and the order will be amended to show the full price of the model and your deposit payment shown as an order discount. The status of the order will be changed to 'Deposit Balance Due' which then opens up the order to enable a further payment to be made to complete the order. The model is then despatched once payment has been received.

If you are not inclined to use the website to buy but still want to pre-order a certain model, then please call the shop on 0121 550 1266 to give us your order and we will then ensure that you get your model, if stock is still available to order from the manufacturer, and you can choose to pay on order or pay later when the model is despatched.

We will also be adding other ranges on to the website too, so please keep an eye out for those as well as we endeavour to offer our customers the best possible range of products all at very competitive prices. Remember all our models are exactly the same as those offered elsewhere but often the free carriage over £60 can be forgotten when comparing prices, making us even more competitive!

Things are changing here at Tennents Trains whilst, at the same time, staying the same!

However, they are staying in the same in that you will get the same great level of service that we have given to our customers over many years of trading and you will still find the things that you thought might be no longer available on the High St.

by Peter Wright

Updated Post 29th January 2017. We can also take American Express cards too!

We are pleased to say that we use SagePay as our card payment processing partner. SagePay is, of course, a household name and well respected for credit card payments, giving customers peace of mind that their card details are in safe hands when using our site. All payments are carried out on SagePay's secure servers so you have peace of mind knowing your details remain safe and secure.

For those customers wishing to secure products on a pre-order basis, we have now introduced the Deferred Payment option at checkout. By choosing this option you complete the transaction in the normal way but the payment information does not get sent to the clearing bank until we have requested such clearance when the goods have been despatched. Despite the delay in processing the payment, at no time are your details, card details or anything else available for any of our employees, or those of Sage Pay, to see or use in any way, so your data remains safe and secure.

Of course, we are still offering PayPal as a means of payment so you can still easily use your PayPal account to pay for your orders. Again this payment method offers complete peace of mind in payment security with no data held on our servers at all.

From Train Set to Railway Layout

21 Sep 2016
by Peter Wright

Have you and the kids become fed up with watching a train go round and round? Well before you throw your Hornby train set back in its box and put it in the loft and forget about it, perhaps we could consider a few suggestions.

Firstly, is part of the problem having no space to keep the track in position permanently? If so, then you could think about creating a small space to hold the beginnings of a layout on a more permanent basis. Simple places such as under the bed or hanging off the wall offer a quick startup to any running session and do not take up any space when not in use. For those lucky enough to have space in the garage or loft will have even better opportunities to transform the train set into a layout but it is not essential, small spaces can be utilized to create a very interesting layout.

Operational interest on the layout is all about getting the trains to do things and this can be created quite simply to begin with by adding a siding and / or a passing loop. Both will allow the use of a second locomotive along with the addition of a few isolated track sections, to add more operational interest as you pass control from one train to the other and back again.

Tennents Trains You Tube Channel

16 Sep 2016
by Peter Wright

We are delighted with our You Tube Channel which shows videos of trains, products and anything else of interest that we come across. As well as loving model trains we also have a great love of the real thing, both standard and narrow gauge trains, and are keen to show it with these videos.

We have also published a series of 'How to' demo videos, provided by our friends at Multifix to whom we are grateful, showcasing the Multifix range of products which we believe are a fantastic addition to any modellers kit bag.

Here is just one of the train videos that we have published and it is showing the Kingston Flyer reversing back on to her train ready for the return journey back to Kingston, located on the southern tip of Lake Wakatipu on the South Island of New Zealand.

Here is another video that we have taken, this time in the shop. A customer brought in his scratchbuilt 009 live steam layout in a box. It was quite something to behold, live steam in such a tiny little locomotive, who would believe it?
