Welcome to Tennents Trains' Blog Pages
Here we will periodically publish articles of interest on all topics from the model railway world as well as news items and updates from the shop.
All views expressed in this blog are those of the writer alone and do not necessarily represent the views of Tennents Trains Ltd.
Have you and the kids become fed up with watching a train go round and round? Well before you throw your Hornby train set back in its box and put it in the loft and forget about it, perhaps we could consider a few suggestions.
Firstly, is part of the problem having no space to keep the track in position permanently? If so, then you could think about creating a small space to hold the beginnings of a layout on a more permanent basis. Simple places such as under the bed or hanging off the wall offer a quick startup to any running session and do not take up any space when not in use. For those lucky enough to have space in the garage or loft will have even better opportunities to transform the train set into a layout but it is not essential, small spaces can be utilized to create a very interesting layout.
Operational interest on the layout is all about getting the trains to do things and this can be created quite simply to begin with by adding a siding and / or a passing loop. Both will allow the use of a second locomotive along with the addition of a few isolated track sections, to add more operational interest as you pass control from one train to the other and back again.
We are delighted to introduce our brand new You Tube Channel which we will use the show videos of trains, products and anything else of interest that we come across. As well as loving model trains we also have a great love of the real thing, both standard and narrow gauge trains, and are keen to show it with these videos. We have also published a series of 'How to' demo videos, provided by our friends at Multifix to whom we are grateful, showcasing the Multifix range of products which we believe are a fantastic addition to any modellers kit bag.
Here is just one of the train videos that we have published and it is showing the Kingston Flyer reversing back on to her train ready for the return journey back to Kingston, located on the southern tip of Lake Wakatipu on the South Island of New Zealand.
Here is another video that we have taken, this time in the shop. A customer brought in his scratchbuilt 009 live steam layout in a box. It was quite something to behold, live steam in such a tiny little locomotive, who would believe it?
For a few weeks earlier in the summer, we had a small end-to-end layout in the shop based on a country branch terminus station (see images inset). The layout was built by one of the shop volunteers and it created a lot of interest amongst our customers coming into the shop to buy their bits and pieces until one day one of them brought the layout too! It has been missed to say the least and it is now our intention to build another, more permanent layout in the shop, that will also act as our test track for those customers wanting to see their new purchases running before they take them away.
In this category I have added a few photographs from my collection and offer them for sale at a modest price for your own personal use. I will be adding more in the days and weeks to come, covering a broad spectrum of subjects including Steam, Modern, Narrow Gauge and Infrastructure from both the United Kingdom and abroad.
Overhead catenary is one of those lineside features that until recently has been difficult for modellers to replicate unless they were prepared to scratch build it. So we are delighted to let you know that the imminent release of our brand new overhead electric catenary system, including masts and contact wires, is upon us!
The magnificent 9F (e28) from Ace Trains has now started to be delivered so if you would like one then please let us know and we can organise things for you. The image depicted is 'Black Prince' No.92203 which is preserved and runs on the North Norfolk Railway from Sheringham to Holt. Other named locomotives include 'Evening Star', the last steam locomotive built for British Railways, along with the vast majority of the class which just received a number.
We have added a small range of DIY products which has been specially selected and designed to help the modeller in the construction and further development of their model railway layout.
