Signals are vitally important to the safe running of any railway. Policemen acted as the very first signalmen and used hand-signals to control locomotive movements. As time progressed and accidents happened, the need for better signalling systems became all too clear. Wires and interlocking control systems soon became the norm as safety became paramount in the operation of a safe railway. The telegraph bell code system completed the system as boxes were able to communicate with each other prior to locomotives being allowed to enter a new section of track.
